There is a particular kind of satisfaction in finding a piece you reach for again and again. You know how it sits, which shoes work with it, and how you feel when you walk out of the door.
On a busy October morning, that familiarity is useful. The calendar might hold a meeting, a few errands and dinner with someone you have been meaning to see. Getting dressed becomes easier when your favourite pieces can move through the day with you.
At Studio MX, we love clothing with character. And character leaves plenty of room for repetition.
Start with a piece that gives you options
A versatile wardrobe can include a dramatic neckline, flowing fabric or an unexpected detail. The useful question is: how many ways can you make that piece feel like you?
Our Portree blouse is made from crushed chiffon, with a relaxed, slightly oversized fit. Its ties can be worn at the front, back or side, and its straight neckline can also be worn off the shoulder.
Those details give you several starting points. Try a back tie with tailored trousers for a clean front. Move the tie to the side with denim for a more relaxed outfit. For dinner, experiment with an off-the-shoulder neckline and earrings that draw attention to the face.
When trying a new arrangement, check it while sitting down, reaching forward and walking. An outfit earns its place in your wardrobe when you can comfortably live in it.
Change the balance of the outfit
Before deciding you need something new, change what surrounds your favourite piece.
With a flowing blouse, try a more defined trouser shape. If your outfit feels too formal, switch the heels for flat boots. If everything feels a little understated, add one deliberate detail: a sculptural earring, a strong belt or a bag with an interesting texture.
Black is especially useful here. Different surfaces give an all-black outfit depth: the softness of knitwear, the texture of chiffon and the sheen of satin each catch the eye differently.
Our Satin Portree offers another interpretation, with draping fabric and an elegant sheen. Pairing that sheen with matte trousers is one way to create interest while keeping the colour palette simple.
The same principle works for occasionwear. An open-back Black Calla dress can become a familiar favourite for different evenings. Try changing your jewellery, shoes or hairstyle, allowing the open back to remain the focal point.
A change in fashion worth knowing about
This year, the conversation about clothing waste gained a concrete development. From 19 July 2026, the EU’s ban on destroying unsold apparel, clothing accessories and footwear applies to large companies, with specified exceptions, including certain safety and damage situations.
This rule concerns what businesses do with unsold stock. It also gives us a useful reason to think about the value of clothing beyond the moment it is purchased.
For your own wardrobe, that can begin with a simple question: where will I actually wear this?
Before buying, picture three real occasions in your calendar and the pieces you already own that would work with it. A beautiful garment becomes more useful when you can see its place in your life.
Give your favourites a little attention
Once you find something you love wearing, learn its care requirements. Different fabrics and finishes need different treatment, even when two garments look similar.
For the crushed-chiffon Portree blouse, our current care instructions specify a 30°C machine wash and a maximum spin speed of 800 rpm. Any ironing should use low heat and low steam; high heat can damage the fabric. Always check the instructions supplied with your particular garment.
Make care part of getting ready, too. Check a fastening before leaving, deal with a loose thread carefully, and put clothing away ready for its next outing. Small habits make it easier to keep your favourites in rotation.
Make repetition your signature
Having a recognisable style often comes from returning to the shapes, colours and details you enjoy.
Wear the blouse again. Bring the dress out for another celebration. Try a different tie, a different shoe, a different mood.
